As well as offering the traditional TUC programme for union, health and safety and union learning representatives, Derby Trade Union Education Centre can offer a wide range of options to help Workplace Representatives, Branch Officers and Full Time Officials meet the training needs of their Members and Representatives. We can also provide courses to jointly train Union and Management personnel. As a general guide, for educational and financial reasons, we would normally need a minimum of 12 learners to run a course / programme.
Reviewing your Training Needs
Unsure of what training is needed in your Union Branch or at your workplace?
The Trade Union Education Centre can help you to review your training needs. From the review, we could advise you of the course, or programme of courses, which could meet your requirements. (Depending upon the time and complexity of the review, there may be a cost for this service.).
The TUC Stage 1 Courses
Are there enough Reps at your workplace / Branch to do a Stage 1 course?
We need a minimum of 12 Reps to make a special Stage 1 viable. We can deliver the Stage 1 courses (see page 16) by block release (2 periods of 5 days) rather than 1 day per week (11 weeks). We can arrange a Stage 1 at your workplace, in the community close to your Reps or as a residential course. We will be happy to talk to you about the arrangements.
(Depending upon the travelling or residential time involved for the Tutor there may be a cost for this service.).
Issue Based Courses
Are there issues at your workplace you need training about?
We can provide specific courses on Health & Safety and Employment topics, either ‘Off the peg’ or designed for you (‘Client specific’.). If the issue is complex, or there is a lot of training needed, we may suggest a Programme of courses is organised. We will meet you to discuss your specific needs. (There may be charges for developing and printing the materials to support the course).
Arranging a Programme
A Programme will involve a number of courses over a period of time. It can be developed using ‘Off the peg’ courses, ‘Client specific’ courses, or a mixture of both. If a Programme of courses is appropriate for you, we will usually need a term’s notice to be able to make the arrangements.
Arranging ‘Off the peg’ courses
If the Trade Union Education Centre has already got a course available that meets your needs, this should be the simplest course to organise.
We will have to agree suitable dates (to make sure the appropriate Tutor/s are available) and a venue. The Trade Union Education Centre will advise you of the facilities we expect to have if the course is not being held in one of our own venues.
Arranging ‘Client Specific’ courses
If you need a course, or courses, designed for you :
Course materials and resources will then be designed specifically for you. We hope to arrange a date for the course within six weeks - subject to Tutors and venues being available.
Arranging Joint courses with Management
If this is an appropriate form of training to meet your needs :
We can provide either a Programme, ‘Off the peg’ or ‘Client specific’ courses. Non TUC Union members on these courses will be charged a full cost rate (or we may agree an overall fee for the course/s.).
Charging Policy
The Trade Union Education Centre does have a procedure for determining the charges for its specially arranged courses. Because the needs of each Union organisation may be very different, we will always be happy to discuss the potential charges for a course or programme with you.
