Courses for Trade Union Representatives and members The TUC programme is aimed at accredited Union, Health & Safety and Learning Representatives. Upon election or appointment Representatives have a legal right to paid 'Time off for trade union duties and activities' which includes attending training courses. Derby Trade Union Education Centre (DTUEC) offers the TUC’s core programme for Union, Health & Safety and Learning Representatives as well as a Short Course and Certificate Programme. We have successfully provided the programme over many years. The Trade Union Education Centre and the TUC attract a wide range of learners: including many for whom this will be the first learning opportunity since their school days. We will work with you to help create a relaxed and supportive environment for learning. The learning experience at DTUEC focuses on the learner and builds on the learner’s skills, experiences and knowledge.

TUC Union Representative - Stage 1
This course will help you develop the skills and knowledge that you will need to represent your members. Things you will learn about will include :
- Your responsibilities as a Union Rep;
- Building and maintaining a strong union organisation;
- Handling members’ problems;
- Participating in meetings and making reports;
- Collective bargaining and collective agreements.
TUC Union Representatives - Stage 2
This course is the second part of the training for Union Representatives. You should have completed the Stage 1 course first. Things you will learn about will include: How to participate in collective bargaining;
- Key changes at work and their implications for unions;
- The framework for employment law as it affects Unions and individuals;
- The links between UK and European law.
Please note: Reps who have completed Stage 1 should have a period of further workplace experience before taking Stage 2.
TUC Health and Safety - Stage 1
This course will help you develop the skills and knowledge that you will need to represent your members. Things you will learn about will include :
- The role and responsibilities of Safety Reps;
- How to identify hazards and problems in the workplace;
- How to improve Union organisation for Health & Safety;
- How to take up problems with management;
- What the law says about Health and Safety.
TUC Health and Safety - Stage 2
This course is the second part of the training for Health & Safety Representatives. You should have completed the Stage 1 course first. Things you will learn about will include:
- The changing role of Health & Safety Representatives;
- The legal framework and links between UK and European law;
- Getting involved in assessments;
- The management of Health & Safety;
- Information and consultation systems.
Please note: Reps who have completed Stage 1 should have a period of further workplace experience before taking Stage 2.
TUC Union Learning Representatives
The role of the Union Learning Representative has statutory backing for paid time-off for training and carrying out duties. The right to time-off has also been granted to members wanting to access the services provided by ULRs. The role of the ULR offers trade unions an opportunity to further develop workplace organisation, put training and lifelong learning on the bargaining agenda as well as offering members additional benefits to union membership. It is hoped that the role will encourage a new generation of union activists and as such the course is open to union members wanting to become advocates for learning.

- Identifying Individual Learning Needs
Additional Units
There are Additional Units available in the Learning Reps’ programme which help to develop and enhance the Reps’ skills and knowledge. Amongst the most popular are Units on :

- Workforce Development

Short Course Programme
We run an extensive programme of short courses on employment law, industrial relations, health and safety and other topics. Short courses are generally 2 or 3 days duration and are fully accredited. Recent short courses have included:

ICT for Trade Unionists
Suitable for beginners and the experienced ICT user alike, this course leads to OCN credits. Flexible learning for a maximum of 30 hours on Fridays (from 0900 to 1400) in Derby.
