Before starting my employment at South East Derbyshire College then Derby College, I was an active member / union rep for UCATT (Union of Construction,Allied Trades and Technicians) working for the local authority and steering it through a housing stock transfer. I was representing up to 70 members employed within all realms of construction, with a very diverse range of needs. I joined the College some six years ago and was initially employed as a brickwork demonstrator and ended up working towards the teaching qualifications needed to become a lecturer. I then moved from demonstrator to lecturer, and then to manager of the department within 3.5 years and that's currently my role. I have completed level 1 and level 2 union reps, and health and safety reps courses at Derby College whilst employed by the local authority. I was motivated to attend by the literature received from Derby Trade Union Education Centre and from responding to members needs. Attending the courses helped build my confidence when representing members, negotiating with management and aided my presentation skills. I also developed my skills at research and using employment / H&S legislation. The motivation for attending those courses was the thirst and desire for knowledge and being able to give 100% to my members. I am still a member of the union but with no official role within it, but still an active supporter / advocate of the trade union movement. My tips for anyone else wanting to do any trade union education: you never stop learning, don't be afraid to ask, enjoy it and use the knowledge gained. |
