Learner Profile - Azra Mehmood Print

What have you done through DTUEC?

I have completed my Level 1 Numeracy qualification and i am now working towards my Level 2 qualification which is recognised nationally and equivalent to a GCSE pass.

How did you find out about the course?
A colleague at Derby College advised me of the Learndirect facility at Derby Trade Union Education Centre. I joined the course because I was able to complete the work around my family commitments and with two children to look after, my time is precious.

What role do you have in union?
I have been a UNISON member for ten years and work for Derby City Council as a Teaching Assistant at Rosehill Infant School . I would like to gain promotion as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

How did the Learndirect course help you?
The course gave me the confidence to update my qualifications as I would like to attend a Higher Level Teaching Assistant course and it is a requirement for joining that course that you have a Level 2 Numeracy qualification.

Which aspect of the course was the most help?
I liked the fact that I could complete the work for the course in my own time but was able to call on the support of my Tutor (Sue) when required, whether that was going to the Centre or dealing with a problem via email. I enjoyed the fact that I was often getting 1 to 1 support and valued the personal contact with Sue.

What motivated you to do the course?
A desire to eventually gain my qualified HLTA status. I think the course works for me because it has been easy to understand and that I have been able to work online in my own time. I have enjoyed the fact that the class based work is not formal and that suits my learning style.

Which aspects are you most proud of?
The course has given me the confidence to move forward with my studies and will eventually lead to promotion at work. I have received lots of encouragement along the way.

What are the rewards and benefits to you?
I have valued being responsible for my own learning and I found that very motivating.

What next and plans for the future?
After I have achieved my Level 2 qualification I will move on to the HLTA qualification.

Top tips for anyone else?
Stick to your guns and don’t be disheartened. Sometimes it takes a long while to achieve something but at the end you will be a better person for it!

Anything else you would like to be known!!
Thanks for all your help and support.
